MovieMask is aiming to disrupt the VR-industry through defining a new segment for dedicated videomasks. The team went from idea to market in less than 11 months with less than 1 MNOK spent, and has since November delivered more than 3000 products. Meet co-founder Eirik Wahlstrøm and Marketing Director Ada Lea at Startup Extreme tomorrow!

#WHYWE scale

We have simplified a booming technology to make it more accessible for everyone. Great feedback on active users and a successfull launch in Norway, ensures us that there's a huge blue ocean for the concept we have developed. A concept we invented and want to become a market leader in globally.

#WHYWE have gotten investors

Our 10 investors have background as founders, lawyers and CEOs. We believe they are convinced that we are addressing a huge market opportunity with a positive, engaged and driven team determined to succeed.

#WHYWE want investors

Timing is everything. We went from idea to market in record time, and funding will help us scale globally faster - which will be necessary to define the genre for dedicated videomasks as MovieMask.

#WHYWE will win the market

We have a unique solution that carves out a giant blue ocean for movie lovers around the world, and have a successful domestic launch to back the claims.

#WHYWE are an awesome team

The speed of MovieMask has been been maintained by the teams’ ability to engage and maintain successful partnerships with organizations and third party actors, as well as the ability to grow the organization. Furthermore, we have a strong board of active investors that have contributed with network, capital, experience and direct commitment towards the success of MovieMask as a global brand.

#WHYWE want to join Startup Extreme

We are looking for a few more experienced investors to further strengthen our board of advisors, preferably with international experience within marketing or retail, and are also looking forward to make new connections in the startup community

And in the end, best tip: The sooner you test something that's not finished - the easier it will be to implement the changes the user want and are willing to pay for. Regardless if you are building software or hardware - we suggest the "Prototype - Test - Coffee - Repeat" methodology! Share at will!

Shaking up the traditional banking sector

Shaking up the traditional banking sector

Payr is a fast-growing Norwegian Fintech startup set to shake up the traditional banking sector. They recently raised a pre-seed round of 400 000 Euros to launch their app, set to happen in only a few weeks! Meet Marketing Manager Yvonne Edseth in Bergen on Tuesday!

#WHYWE scale

Payr`s big advantage is that we are able to build a product that gives independent and actionable advice in a market dominated by low trust, low competition and slow rate of innovation.

We have first-mover advantage, short time-to-market, extremely scalable business model, and a rapid growth and scale strategy. Our licenses from the Financial Authorities, clearing bank and KYC/AML partners, are easily passportable across EU, reducing time and cost to go to new markets. We have built the first version of Payr as a springboard to have perfect timing and scale to take full advantage of PSD2 and other imminent European regulatory changes. These forces are forcing banks, card issuers and other financial parties to lower their costs and open up data access. This gives us a head start that is ample for Payr to be one of the winners in a "post PSD2 world".

#WHYWE have gotten investors

A new regulation in the EU, PSD2, enables bank customers, both consumers and businesses, to use third-party providers to manage their finances, opening up for competition with established banks without actually needing to become a bank.

We saw this opportunity early, and are well-prepared for when the regulation officially takes effect in 2018. Being an early mover allows us to focus on building a strong brand and good customer relations, as well as building a product stepwise that customers actually desire. Our current investors are tech-savvy analysts and entrepreneurs; they have seen the same opportunity as us and believe in our concept, timing and team.

#WHYWE want investors

We have global ambitions and believe that we can take a reasonable share of the market, first in the Nordics, then rolling out in several other European countries. We are also going to add more features to offer our customers, such as a product comparison engine. In order to achieve this we need to grow our team and scale our business. This requires cash, smart advice and network effects, and we are looking for the right investors to join us on this journey.

#WHYWE will win the market

Payr is a fast mover in a slowly changing market, with a strong team with years of experience in building and scaling companies. We also have a dedicated and strong Board of Directors with relevant experience from Mastercard, Nordea, mCash, Telecom and the legal field. With three designers on the team, we`ve also had focus on creating a great user experience from day one. Last but not least we have secured strong partnerships with some of the leading providers in the banking industry, among these Nets, Swedbank, BankID and eFaktura, and we have crossed the regulatory minefield and secured EU-wide operations approval.

#WHYWE are an awesome team

Our founding team has a total of 6 exits, so we have walked the entrepreneurial path before, and know a lot of what is to be expected. We also believe that a diverse team is a winning team, and we have an almost 50/50 balance of men and women, with team members from both Norway, Latvia and Poland.

#WHYWE want to join Startup Extreme

First and foremost to meet investors and media, and to connect with the Norwegian startup ecosystem. Doing it the Norwegian way with extreme sports and extreme dinner is a bonus!

And in the end, best tip: If we have to choose only one thing, it would be to not be too scared to share information about your concept and plans when talking to other startups and investors. Unless your idea is very unique, it`s not all about the concept, but rather execution, timing, scaling, your team and your traction. Don't waste time in meetings where you give too little information, because people can´t help or trust you if you don't share anything. Bonus tip: Pay(r) it forward as much as you can!

Building new technology enabling video-on-demand

Building new technology enabling video-on-demand

Marianne Bratt Ricketts, CEO & Co-founder at Vibbio, has many exciting plans in the loop. Amongst those plans are a brand new platform, new technology enabling video-on-demand for businesses and international expansion! Together with her co-founder she has built a fast growing company in record time, and we can`t wait to have her on stage at Startup Extreme!

#WHYWE scale

We are scaling to meet the huge and growing need for smart video solutions. In our company, we both work with creating inspiration and online learning with regards to easy ways to create good content - and now when we are also starting to build tech solutions to automate the video production track, we need to further grow our team. This will also mean that we go from a pay-per-video model, to a pay-per-month subscription model (and from a fairly local product to a global market product).

#WHYWE have gotten investors

I believe investors are interested in VIBBIOs potential, with video becoming a global mega-trend.

#WHYWE want investors

To be able to fast and fully transition our company from video production (only scalable locally) to video on demand, as a tech solution (scalable globally).

#WHYWE will win the market

VIBBIO is a B2B company. There are many simple and quick solutions for the consumer end of the video market, but currently no clear contenders in the business end of the video segment. VIBBIO is already a market leader in Norway, within smart videos and video for SoMe.

#WHYWE are an awesome team

"We are a female-led company, with 5 out of 5 managers currently being women, though we are an almost 50-50 gender balanced organisation as a whole. With broad backgrounds from media, marketing, video and design - we have a deep understanding of the changes the marketing-and communications sections are undergoing, and we work hard to constantly stay updated on the latest trends, while continually testing our formats and analysing results and audience patterns."

#WHYWE want to join Startup Extreme

To connect with investors, potential customers and the wider startup scene.

And in the end, best tip: You don't always need to BE an expert, to become one

Jakob Palmers pitching at 500 Nordics Demo Day. Photo: 500 Nordics

Meet #gaffahacking expert and co-founder at Graphiq, Jakob Palmers. His startup was last year named one of the 500 most promising tech startups in Europe, and that without building any tech themselves. He will be pitching on stage June 13th, don't miss it!

#WHYWE scale

Graphiq have developed a half-human, half-machine process for connecting companies with hand-picked designers. This ensures high quality delivery in every project we do and is the reason our success rate is 98,8%. Yeah, it’s true.

Also, we are solving a pain for both the customers and the designers which attracts both sides of the market. We are saving our customers time and money while giving them access to a huge talent pool of designers. For the designers we are giving them awesome projects and handling all the administrative side of freelancing from payment to contracts.

#WHYWE have gotten investors

We have not got investors, and that’s on purpose. I personally see too many people chase investors and think investments are the holy grail of succeeding in building a startup. It’s not.

What you should do is focusing on solving your customer’s problems, talking to them and hacking together products that the customers want. Get them to pay for your product from day one. This was our approach and we got a lot of traction without building any tech from the ground up.

#WHYWE want investors

We have had a lot of interest from investors since we launched and we have tried to give updates on a regular basis on our development. Now we have iterated on our product a numerous of times, made it more scalable and have seen some good traction over the last months. We are moving into a phase where we are getting ready to scale up and are looking for investors to join our journey, changing the way companies work and outsource design services.

#WHYWE will win the market

We have been focusing on solving our customer’s problem from day one, making their life easier. Now that our product works better, we receive really good feedback from our customers and they are coming back to us for new projects. When customers love your product, they will not leave you, but rather tell their friends. That’s why we see one third of our traffic from referrals which is great.

Together with happy customers we have attracted some of the best designers in the design community and are working on bringing in more talent. We are receiving application every week from designers who want to do awesome projects, stay free and experience a hassle free work environment working through Graphiq. The designers are one of the most important resources as they do the creative work and we are very concerned about helping the best way possible.

#WHYWE are an awesome team

We have one awesome German guy, Marian, who taught himself Norwegian in less than 4 months and now people don’t even believe he is German. Erik, who is a famous certified Cowboy from a ranch in Australia and was flown into a investor meeting in London when he was 19. Ingrid who’s been living in the US and plays the best R&B-rhymes while enlightening our users on how they can grow their business. Frede, who’s raced 22 000 km from London to Mongolia through five different mountain ranges and now understands how the world is connected. And finally myself, with the all time high record for selling Christmas trees in Norway.

Our team is diversified and have different stories to share, but one thing that is common is that we all get shit done and have fun while doing it. We are always looking for other passionate people so shoot me an e-mail if you feel you have something to add to the team.

#WHYWE want to join Startup Extreme

A side from trying out the wind tunnel, rafting down the river or skydiving over the scenic views of Norway I can’t think of much else...no just kidding! I`m really looking forward to hear great talks, meet investors in the wild to see what they got and connect with other startups and media. I have heard it is a great event and I am sure it will live up to it’s expectations. We will also be pitching on stage June 13th, so come join us if you are also going.

And in the end, best tip: Use Zapier to automate your tedious tasks you do over and over again. Do it now, it will save you a lot of time. If you don’t know how to get started, send me an e-mail at jakob@graphiq.design and I’ll help you out.

Norway's Adventurer of the Year turned Entrepreneur and Investor

Norway's Adventurer of the Year turned Entrepreneur and Investor

PHOTO: Bergans

PHOTO: Bergans

Tormod Granheim has always had a passion for extremes. He was the first man to ski down Everest’s North Face, and has now turned Entrepreneur and Investor. You can hear his story at Startup Extreme June 13th in Bergen.

How did it happen that you became entrepreneur and investor?

I have been interested in visionary leadership and exploring new frontiers all my life. As an adventurer, and defence consultant, you learn to rely on, and love, small and dedicated teams. Last year I got in touch with the Andreas Swahn, the founder of Smartster - and recognized the dedication I look for in expedition-partners - so I made my first startup-investment.

How can the mindset and skills you have as a daredevil and mountain climber be used in the startup world?

It may look reckless, and in a way I love the feeling of adrenalin in my veins. I believe there are strong similarities between the two, and although we may all be fueled by big dreams, we are also analytical, risk-averse and willing and able to work hard to reach our goals.

Why do you invest in the startups you do/what are you looking for?

Entrepreneurs have always inspired me. I’m looking for strong teams who are bold and humble at the same time.

What is your impression of the startup scene in Norway?

It feels as if it’s just starting to get exciting - with a proper ecosystem being developed as we speak.

Why do you want to join Startup Extreme?

I think it will be a great opportunity to expand my network, feel the pulse of the startup world and hopefully find a few more investors who can join our journey with Smartster.

And in the end, best tip: Train hard. Pitch easy.

Axel Franck Næss & Eirik Rime, founders of Tise

Axel Franck Næss & Eirik Rime, founders of Tise

Eirik and Axel built Tise during their studies, and launched it in the Norwegian market in September 2016. Now, 9 months later, the marketplace-app has more than 200,000 registered users, 650,000 listings, and 30,000 people using the service every day. The European and Chinese markets are now waiting, and they are both looking forward to connect with investors at Startup Extreme.

#WHYWE scale

We have developed an unbeatable combination of viral and paid marketing, whereas both are highly replicable. The service in itself is also very scalable as it does not need any physical locations to survive, and goods are traded without our involvement in the physical handover.

#WHYWE have gotten investors

We believe we have gotten investors because we have a great team and a product that truly speaks to a young generation of more conscious consumers.

#WHYWE want investors

We want to replicate our current proof-of-concept to other markets, and for that we want investors!

#WHYWE will win the market

We have an uniquely cheap acquisition cost, and are not bound to extreme marketing budgets for getting the activity needed for a classifieds service to survive.

#WHYWE are an awesome team

The two of us built the foundation of the product ourselves and hence has a unique insight to all aspects of the product. Also, our very active chairman has a unique experience and overview of the classifieds business. We would also say that our creative director is likely the most creative person in Norway, and has a one-of-a-kind understanding and influence on our target-group. Lastly, we have recruited awesome people in all parts of the business, and are currently 9 employees.

#WHYWE want to join Startup Extreme

We are currently raising money and want to meet investors. We are also excited to meet the rest of the Norwegian startup eco-system!

And in the end, best tip: If you decide to start an app-business, know that the most difficult part is not to make the app.

On the lookout for tech companies of tomorrow

On the lookout for tech companies of tomorrow

Meet Henrik Grim, focusing on venture investments across multiple sectors in Nortzone. At Startup Extreme he will be looking for entrepreneurs with the drive and vision to build the global companies of tomorrow. And participate in extreme sports of course!

#WHY did you become an investor?

Being a venture investor gives me the opportunity to work with amazing people on topics that excite me. Meeting, talking to and working with entrepreneurs who fight hard to achieve their vision just gives a lot of energy. Combining that with intellectual stimulation of trying to understand and predict the future is the perfect match to me.

#WHY do you invest in the startups you do?

At Northzone, we look for entrepreneurs with the drive and vision to build the global companies of tomorrow, leveraging technology. The companies we invest in typically fall into one of two categories; Game Changers, who define a new market through product and/or business model innovation, like our portfolio company Spotify did. Or Game Winners, who play in an established market, but outperform the competition through better product performance and/or business execution, like our previous portfolio company Avito.

What do you think of the Norwegian startup scene?

The Norwegian startup scene is once again on the rise, with increasing activity among entrepreneurs, business angels and community players fueling the ecosystem. Moreover, the government's ambition to reduce reliance on the oil economy provides an interesting time for startups to get even further support. We typically see that three things are needed to build a strong and innovative tech hub: a strong community with role models, access to talent, and smart money supporting great entrepreneurs. Norway has access to all of this, and we are excited about what the future holds.

#WHY will Norwegian startups win the market?

Being part of the ecosystem described above, Norwegian startups have access to the core pre-requisites needed to succeed. However, in essence, it all comes down to the entrepreneurs. My impression is that there is a built-up supply of talented, driven entrepreneurs in Norway, who are ready to go big on their ideas and put Norway on the map as a tech hub. That’s what will make all the difference.

#WHY do you want to join Startup Extreme?

To me, Startup Extreme is a great crucible of entrepreneurial energy, where the local Norwegian ecosystem meets the international investor community. Combining that mix with high-octane extreme sports is an opportunity you can’t miss!

And in the end, best investor tip:

Make the most out of the Startup Extreme by knowing what you’re after, and pursue it actively!

Did you think there only were corporates, startups and investors coming to Startup Extreme? Think again! Meet Startup Extreme DJ Presentation EFX, also known as Clayt La Motte, ready to heat up the dancefloor. “The best feeling in the world is when people still dance to my music when the lights comes on”.

#WHY did you become a DJ

Back in the 80ies I was a “Box boy”, helping a friend who`s a DJ carrying the DJ speakers and all the cords every time he had a gig. I`m from the Caribbean and when I moved to Miami for college my friends and I controlled the caribbean nightlife scene. My friend was a really good DJ but was quite shy, so I was his voice, his hype man, while he played. When I moved to London after college and later to Norway in 2007 I didn't feel what the Norwegian DJs were doing and thought to myself that if they can do it, I can do it! The memories from good times in Miami are still very clear in my mind, and I want to share this good feeling with Norwegians.

#WHY will you play at Startup Extreme

I heard about Startup Extreme through my connections, which is what Startup Extreme is all about! A friend actually introduced me to the Startup Extreme Team two years ago, and after that I`ve been doing many gigs for both Startup Extreme and Angel Challenge. I like to play a lot of different things but I'd say I'm definitely influenced by caribbean music, zouk, jamaican rhythms, r&b, soul and funk.

What was your first impression of Startup Extreme?

I think it's a brilliant concept! I like the vibe! Young and energetic people everywhere. Last year I met a lot of people doing things that is kind of similiar to what I'm doing. As a DJ I have to think of branding and connections and customers; I am a startup as well.

What are you looking forward to the most with startup extreme?

Getting people excited and making them dance. When I play I want people to stay until the lights comes on, that must be the best feeling in the world; just making people happy!
